Matt Richards

Solo guitar /Power Trio Jazz Project /Composer /Educator

Barnes Arboretum – 2017

Guitarist Matt Richards does not fit easily into a single musical category. In his Solo Acoustic Guitar performances, he brings jazz, world and classical influences together to craft his own very unique musical identity. With his Power Trio Jazz Project Matt explores energized, interactive music that resonates with jazz sophistication. Through his composing and musical production work he explores a wealth of ideas beyond the guitar. It may seem that Matt's elusive musical profile has distanced him from any sort of celebrity status -- in fact, he has earned an international following through performances, recordings and social media and gained unsolicited recognition from acclaimed musical artists such as Larry Coryell, Eric Johnson and Pierre Bensusan.

"Matt’s rendition of Manha de Carnaval is a masterpiece. I've never heard better."

Larry Coryell

Matt has been featured as a solo artist in settings as grand as the Montreal Jazz Festival and as informal as an open-air market. A broad stylistic repertoire fits with his penchant for spontaneity and improvisation and suits Matt's personal preference to play a classical-style guitar. His music usually defies categories and labels – Matt doesn't mind and welcomes this as an opportunity to connect with a wider audience. He brings virtuoso skill to a repertoire that showcases his original compositions alongside signature interpretations of standards and the music of the Beatles, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix.

Matt's Power Trio Jazz Project (PTJP) is most obviously a jazz group, but one that dispels the concept of jazz as an historical artifact. The trio brings an infusion of energy and a sense of excitement to the music while remaining based in the foundation of jazz. As the nucleus of the group, Matt draws upon a roster of highly-respected world-class artists who share the energized, interactive approach to playing live that has become a trademark of the PTJP. They include bassists Steve Beskrone and Bill Zola and drummers Adrian Valosin, Mike Clark and Kenwood Dennard.

"Richards' group does not play your grandfather's brand of jazz, unless that patriarch happens to be John McLaughlin. The energized sound this trio produces is most definitely 21st century.... Richards is truly a guitarist's guitarist."

Matt is currently booking both solo and trio performances and workshops and educational programs for in 2018. Solo performance dates are in support of his latest all-solo-guitar recording Balance. Additionally, Matt's educational projects for the coming year will include Arranging For Solo Guitar, a workshop that focuses on the specifics of adapting and arranging music for classical and steel-string solo guitar performance. Other programs, including masterclasses and residencies, are available and may be booked in conjunction with performances or as individual events.
